The project was initiated by\u00a0the Finnish\u00a0National Commission for\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0in 1989 and\u00a0Estonia\u00a0officially joined the project in\u00a01992. BSP was\u00a0the first sustained sub-regional UNESCO ASPnet endeavour to promote the protection of a major body of water and its resources, as well as inter-cultural learning and international understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BSP is an international network of schools, engaging all the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. Today, around 200 schools are active in the BSP. BSP raises awareness on the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea and the links between man and nature, helps the teachers and students to notice the surrounding changes and the role of people in these changes, and leads young people to act responsibly.&nbsp;BSP contributes to sustainable development goals and is a fine example of education for sustainable development in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The BSP national&nbsp;coordinator in&nbsp;Estonia is&nbsp;Ms. Maria Ivanova,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:gedy.matisen@tartuloodusmaja.ee\" target=\"_blank\">maria.ivanova@tartuloodusmaja.ee<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tartuloodusmaja.ee\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tartu&nbsp;Environmental&nbsp;Education&nbsp;Centre<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, BSP celebrated its 30th anniversary and for that occasion, Tartu Environmental Education Centre together with Environmental Education Association Etalon and with financial support from the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research and the Estonian Environmental Investment Centre, published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unesco.ee\/public\/The_Best_Practices_Collection-of-the_BSP_1989-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&#8220;The Best Practices Collection of the Baltic Sea Project 1989-2019&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UnescoERK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/UNESCOEesti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Baltic Sea Project\u00a0(BSP) is the biggest project of UNESCO ASPnet in Estonia.
