UNESCO Associated Schools

Founded in 1953, UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) is a global network of over 11 500 educational institutions from 182 countries. Member institutions – ranging from pre-schools, primary, secondary and vocational schools to teacher training institutions – work in support of international understanding, peace, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development and quality education in practice. ASPnet owes its success to dedicated teachers who put in an extra effort to educate their students, enrich their own and student’s view of the world and be more tolerant.

The goal of the ASPnet in Estonia is to provide the students with the opportunities to enhance peace, tolerance, sustainable development, and democracy in Estonia and around the world. The range of activities of the schools participating in the network is not strictly limited. Schools carry out various projects that are used to introduce innovative methods and approaches in education, raise awareness on UN Sustainable Development Goals and implement Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). Schools participating in the network can exchange experiences with ASPnet schools from other countries and participate in video conferences and international events.

ASPnet has 50 members in Estonia. Guide for Estonian ASPnet members “Introduction to the UNESCO Associated Schools Network and guidelines for Estonian Members” (2018) by Estonian National Commission for UNESCO can be downloaded here.

ASPnet coordinator in Estonia is Ms. Meelike Terasmaa, unescoschools@mondo.org.ee (NGO Mondo).
